PJ Dick
9-Year Partnership: Enterprise Software Design Leadership
00
For nearly a decade, Roket partnered with PJ Dick—a family of general contractors and construction materials companies operating across the mid-Atlantic—to transform their fragmented software ecosystem. We created a comprehensive design system and rebuilt their core applications, unifying the user experience across web and mobile while accelerating development timelines.
Problem
PJ Dick's software ecosystem had grown organically over decades, resulting in inconsistent user experiences, usability issues, and development issues. Each application looked and functioned differently. Their construction ERP system, in particular, suffered from outdated UX and technical limitations that hampered daily operations. As the business expanded their web and mobile footprint, they needed a more solid foundation to support rapid development while maintaining consistency across platforms.
Solution
We established a unified design system that became the foundation for all digital products across the organization. This system included Angular component libraries and reusable CSS/JS stylesheets, enabling consistent experiences across web and mobile applications while accelerating development. From there, we led end-to-end design and development across their entire software portfolio—from customer-facing ordering to internal field applications. Each project built upon the design system, creating a cohesive ecosystem that users could navigate intuitively regardless of which tool they were using.
As design lead and strategic partner, I worked directly with PJ Dick's MIS team to shape their digital transformation over nine years. I led UX strategy, design system development, and product design across every major initiative—ensuring each application reflected the broader ecosystem while solving specific business and user issues.
Design System Foundation – I designed and developed PJ Dick's construction-focused design system, based on Bootstrap. This work resolved decades of usability debt and established standards for navigation, data visualization, forms, and workflows that would support the entire product portfolio.
ERP Modernization – I led the ground-up redesign of PJ Dick's core construction ERP (enterprise resource management) software, tackling front-end technology overhaul and comprehensive UX improvements. This multi-release effort included product management support—managing design, releases, research, and cross-functional alignment—along with software branding, training video development, AI integrations, and relentless focus on task simplification for field and office users.
Enterprise Applications – I designed and supported our development team with multiple business-critical applications: an Angular-based ticketing system with customer ordering capabilities, NativeScript iOS and Android mobile field apps, responsive time tracking and scheduling tools, help desk software, and interactive GIS mapping platforms.
GIS Mapping Reimagined – I redesigned PJ Dick's construction mapping software to integrate design system updates while adding interactive features, intuitive navigation, and enhanced data views—reducing complexity while expanding capability.
Throughout this partnership, I worked as part of their team—balancing what would be great design with what we could actually build, pushing back when something wasn't going to work, and always looking for solutions that made sense for users and the business.
“They are a genuine part of our team.”
